1/17/2019 0 Comments End of the Semester Blues...As the semester comes to a close, I can't help but wonder about the skills set (or lack of skills set) of many of my students. Many of them expressed their pure hatred for me and my classes due to the fact that I gave assignments...yes, they were expected to complete assignments! If I had a dollar for every time I heard a student complain about completing assignments or "this is a CA class; we ain't suppose to do no work", I would be rich! I cringe every time I hear those famous lines. There is a serious case of Student apathy going on here and it has affected almost every student I have taught since starting here last year. I definitely have a problem with student apathy and an even bigger problem with apathy due to lack of pedagogy. This is my "End of the Semester Blues". Tyner signing out!

8/16/2017 0 Comments Dream on...Dream on it. Let your mind take you to places you would like to go, and then think about it and plan it and celebrate the possibilities. And don't listen to anyone who doesn't know how to dream. Liza Minnelli I love this quote, and it speaks volumes to my soul as I prepare my mind for tomorrow. I hope my students will let their minds take them places that they could only imagine...
5/10/2013 0 Comments May 10th, 2013Today marked the last day of Teacher's Appreciation Week.
Dear Parents/Guardians: The end of the school is quickly approaching us. Soon the 10th and 11th grade students will be taking State Assessments (I will send a note home with the exact dates) and end-of-year-course testing will begin as well. It is imperative that students are present in class and willing to complete assignments. The majority of the grades I give students in this class are based on class participation; so participation is key in this classroom setting. On another note, I am also preparing IEPs for the new school term. If I have not contacted you about a meeting, your letter (invitation) will be arriving soon. Please return the requested information to me at the school’s address. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact me as well. Seniors will have Exiting meetings (the student will not receive services from the school after graduation). We will discuss post-secondary transitional needs for you and your child to explore. If you do not plan for your child to graduate, please let me know as soon as possible. Summer will be here before you know it! The students reviewed questions related to April 2013 calendar. After calendar review, students wrote in their journals and presented their responses. For ELA, students continued with the Poetry unit. Asked the students three questions to assess their knowledge of poems. What is a poem? Do poems always rhyme? Can you write a poems? I shared two poems with the students today, "Ego-tripping" by Nikki Giovanni and "Dear Mama" sung by Tupac Shakur. The two poems were examples of poems with rhymes and no rhyme. Students had an assignment in which they used magazines and newspapers to make "visual poems". They found images of/words for things that relate to their life. Functional math concept was Pie/Circle graphs.
