School: J H Rose High School
Class: Curriculum Assistance
Grade Level: 9-12
Teacher: Deirdre Tyner
Curriculum Assistance is an exceptional children’s program.class that is designed for students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). It is a support class that aids to the success of content area classes taken by the student. Additionally, this class is designed to tackle annual IEP goals and short term objectives, in the areas of reading, mathematics, writing, behavior, transitional planning, and self-advocacy goals. This enables academic progress and helps in possible processing problems some students may face in their regular education classroom settings.
Curriculum Assistance provides instructional assistance and parallels activities, tasks, and strategies students may experience in all of the subjects and content areas that are covered in the regular classroom. This class is a well-coordinated, well-planned, and instructionally dynamic approach to meeting the needs of students who struggle academically with grade-level content area work.
Class Expectations
~ Students are expected to enter class in an orderly manner, walk quietly to their designated seat, and begin their assignment seat.
~ The agenda is always posted on the board and at least one other location in the classroom.
~ Students are expected to obtain their journals and/or bell-ringer assignment without argument or incident.
immediately begin their journal and/or writing assignment.
~ No cell phones or electrical devices may be used during instructional time unless students are instructed to by the teacher. This includes the charging of cell phones for personal usage (Refer to Pitt County Schools Policy and Procedures, including PCS Code of Student Conduct).
~ Loud talking and laughing, talking to other people during class on your cell phones and/or texting others, playing music and watching videos on your social media accounts during class instruction is strictly prohibited (Refer to Pitt County Schools Policy and Procedures, including PCS Code of Student Conduct).
~ Content material for CA class is expected to be completed before other assignments. You will receive a zero for work assignments that you refuse to complete in this class. This will also affect your Participation grade for class as well.
Class Procedures
~ There is an agenda posted on the board daily.
~ Students begin class with a journal and/or writing assignment. This assignment should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Then we discuss the topic of the journal as a class. Usually I ask 3-5 students to respond to the prompt. Next on the agenda is the main topic of the day. It is usually a learning strategy or an area in which the majority of the students are having difficulty in mastering. I cover all content areas, focusing heavily on meeting their needs for literacy and mathematics. Closure of the lesson/topic is usually an activity or various types of assessments to track their understanding of the concepts covered in class. Essential questions are posted on the board and relate to common core standards for 9th -12th graders.
~ The first portion of class is devoted to study skills and/or the learning strategies discussed in CA. The second half is independent work sessions for the students. Once students complete their assignments for CA, then they are expected to work on material from their content courses. Students may review and organize their notes, study upcoming quizzes or tests, complete assignments (without the sharing of answers with other students or using apps to get the answers to problems without attempting the problem), complete quizzes, and/or ask questions to the CA teacher in reference to material they did not understand during their regular education classes.
Grading
I use the following grading percents for assignments:
- Participation- 50%
- Journals/Bell-Ringers - 30% (There is a rubric for journal completion)
- Classwork - 10%
- Tests/Quizzes - 10%
Disciplinary Actions
1. First Step - Verbal warning
2. Second Step - Student/teacher conference.
3. Third Step - Parent will be contacted and informed in reference to the behavior.
4. Fourth Step - Referral to CHOICE for disciplinary action.
